Clever girl!

when I saw the first previews for Once Upon a Time, I kind of rolled my eyes more than a little bit. As a critical thinker who is a relative veteran of Fantasy & Sci-Fi, the basic premise was a bit of a hard sale.

I’ve been watching it, though, & I’m legitimately enjoying the twists they’ve put on the stories that most of us grew up with. There’s some interesting storytelling happening here, no doubt.

What I’m not enjoying is this subplot of “you can’t trust women because they’re conniving & manipulative”.

What I am enjoying is the casting directors’ choice in scruffy-men-as-love-interest. Also, the Mad Hatter.

But seriously, can we have a story with interesting women at its center that doesn’t have a tacky, bitter, layer of misogyny on top of it all?

It’s 2012, motherfuckers, get with it.

Any of you fools watch Terra Nova? I started it last night & am not sure what to make of it.

• is it still colonialism if there are no humans in the new place?
• ethnically diverse cast. Yes.
• the leader of the “bad guys” is black. Hm.
• the first person we see die is black. Hm.
• it’s basically every sci-fi/unexplored territory show ever, but with dinosaurs.
• are all tv shows this conflict-ridden? do the conflicts just seem more obvious because of bad writing?
• I don’t trust people who are friendly & smile a lot, but I might be broken.

Like why the cancelation? I just don’t get it. I finally had a show that spoke to my life and it gets cancelled because it was too successful at portraying gay men of color as gay men of color and not stereotypes or pathologies of black gay victimhood ( what ever that shit means lol but it’s scholarly—-z formation snap!) Queer as Folk had 5 seasons of boring ass gay white Pittsburgh lol I wasn’t even aware gay people lived there so I know there weren’t any gay men of color featured on the show as anything other than objects of fetish. So now what the fuck am I supposed to watch Logo?

I get pissed too, that kind of visibility is SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO important. So important! Its not like we have anything even near the same concept, it was the only one of its kind. Why let it go? It had a following, at least that’s how it seems to me. We can get a million of the same silly reality show concepts popping up and repeating themselves over and over, shows that are relate-able to no onnneeeeee. (I mean, I’m not living in a house with several other trumped up ridiculous personalities trying to eliminate one another for a shot at love, are you?) But shows that really speak to people who are never properly represented on anything are cancelled after, what was it, two seasons?

You tell me where gay black men are the focus of a recurring series. I’ll wait.

(I also feel the same way about The L Word being cancelled, but at least that had 6 seasons. And don’t you dare tell me The Real L Word is worth a damn thing.)

Also, lmfao QAF is boring as fuckshit.

When I watched it, I had (white) friends being all LOL RILLY? talmbout it was dumb & stuff. See, even if their critiques could be taken as solely pertaining to the acting & writing (*cough*bullshit*cough*), all of the above is still true. AND the acting & writing was on par w/damn near any other successful half-hour sitcom on TV in the past 10 or 15 years.

So y’know… there’s that.
