Anonymous asked: My coworker, a black woman, just got a new hairdo. She used to have an afro, now her hair is straight. Given the problematic legacy of hair straightening (coerced submission to white beauty standards and whatnot), is it racist to tell her that her hair looks nice? Will I seem like I’m really saying that her hair looks nice because it looks like white people hair? Or should I just chill the fuck out and compliment her like I would anyone else?
Yo, just act normal.
- “You got your hair done!”
- Do not say “you got your hair ‘did’!” unless you know them like that.
- if you’re submitting a question like this to YoIsThisRacist, you don’t know them like that.
- ASK HOW SHE FEELS ABOUT HER NEW HAIRDO
- SUPPORT HER DECISION, NO MATTER WHAT YOU THINK YOU THINK OF IT.
